Finding a niche for yourself is important, as this helps define why you're online in business and who you are targeting with your business or product sales...it serves to BRAND you and set you up as an expertise in an area. Finding your niche will help you know how to market and promote what you have to offer.
So...first, there are a couple different types of niches. There's marketing niches and micro niches.
Marketing niches are anything a large number of people are interested in, such as golf, fashion, fishing, or sports. These are huge topics and we need to break these down further, such as breaking down fashion into handbags or eye glasses. But these are still huge niches and we need to break these down further into micro niches.
A micro niche is like looking at fashion and narrowing it down further to sunglasses, and then to designer sunglasses, and then narrowing that down to Oakley's or Ray-Ban's.
Or we can break down fashion into designer shoes, and then down to micro niches of Louboutin or Jimmy Choo. We can break the care of animals down to the care of small animals, and then down to the care of chickens, and then down to micro niches of building a chicken coop, feeding chickens, egg incubators, etc.
The further you break down your niche into smaller and smaller niches, the more successful you will be at marketing and promoting your product or business.
So...your assignment now is to step away from your computer and write down as many ideas for your possible niche as you can... Don't be critical, just write down as many ideas as you have. It can be anything you're involved in like a hobby or an interest or activity you enjoy like walking, bicycling, sketching... Whatever you're interested in and enjoy...or an expertise you have or even your job.
Then take 3 of these ideas and drill them down further into at least 3 micro niches for each of these ideas... These micro niches can be tools you use for these ideas, the processes, the things you need to learn to be good at something...just anything at all involved in each area. Don't be critical, just enjoy running with each idea.
Then...I'd love to hear from you. Have you found your niche? Have an idea to share with us that helped you find your niche? Post any of your ideas below in "Comments."
To your Success,
Thea
